Concept Note:
The Department of Linguistics announces a certificate course in Computational Linguistics. Computational Linguistics is closely connected with computer science and general linguistics. It involves the processing of naturally occurring (human) language by computer. It studies the problems of automated generation, manipulation, and understanding of natural human languages. The Software today is dependent on Artificial Intelligence, language processing and computational linguistics is a core component of AI. This online course provides an introduction to the area of Computational Linguistics. It includes introductions to the major sub areas of the field such as Text Analysis and Speech Analysis, comprising of: speech recognition and synthesis, various Natural Language Processing tools/technologies like morph analyzers and spell checkers, POS tagging, parsing, computational lexicology, WordNet, and machine translation. The course will introduce the participants to the basic key tools and applications in language technology enabling them to further work in the field on Natural Language Processing and contribute as linguist to Artificial Intelligence in the thriving Software Industry.

Course Objective
The main objective of this course is to introduce to the area of Computational Linguistics.
Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this course students will be able -
1. To extract and analyse text corpora
2. To enable further work in the field on Natural Language Processing and to contribute as a linguist to Artificial Intelligence in the thriving software industry.
Course Duration: 30 Hrs (Theory Classes 20 Hrs and Practical Session- 10 Hrs (Language Processing Tools))
Time: Saturday and Sunday From 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Number of Seats: Minimum 10. Maximum 40
Eligibility: Diploma/ Graduation in any discipline from any recognized University.
Credits: 2 Credits
Course Fees: 3000/-

Admission Process:
- The application form of the course can be filled up online at website of University (www.dcpune.ac.in)
- A written entrance examination will be conducted on Basic English Grammar and fundamental logical understanding; selection will be based on that.

Experienced and Qualified Teachers with M.A. and NET in Linguistics and from Industry experienced in Computational Linguistics
Examination:
A written examination will be conducted at the end of the course. The course examination will also include demonstration of Language Technology tools taught with given sample dataset/examples. 75% attendance is required for the Certification.

Syllabus
Unit 1 Introduction to Computational Linguistics
Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence, A short history of Computational Linguistics is provided with traditional grammar and Computer Interface on Language tools. The evolution of Natural Language based Software development and Cognitive Science.

Unit 2: An Introduction to Text Analysis
• Text and Discourse definition, characteristics, various uses and different types of corpora to be used in the computer processing of Natural Language Texts
• The methods of corpus building especially machine readable corpus. Different corpora in use like Brown Corpus/LOB Corpus and Bank of English.
• Introduction to Indian Language Text Processing Scopes and Works
• Introduction to various tools of Text Analysis like WordNet, Spell Checker, Parts-of-Speech (POS) Tagging, Parser, Morphological Analyzer, Stemmer etc.
• Introduction to Linguistic standards and resources for Language Technology
Unit 3: Major Applications of Language Technology: Machine Translation and Information Retrieval
Machine Translation, ambiguity in natural languages with examples, different approaches (rule-based approach, statistical and data-driven approach.

Unit 4: Major Applications of Language Technology: Speech Technology
Speech synthesis, Speech recognition

Unit 5: Practical Application Demonstration of Language Technology:
Various Computational Tools Demonstration and Hand Holding Session on all Language Technology topics of Unit 2-4.
