Art Culture at Deccan College: Historical Background

Debut Performance of Bal Gandharva at Deccan College (1898)

नारायण श्रीपाद राजहंस - बालगंधर्व - Thinkmarathi.com

The stalwart of Marathi sangeet natak and natya sangeet, Bal Gandharva (Narayan Shripad Rajhans), used to perform in the garden facing the main porch of Deccan College. The Deccan College was a fashionable refuge of connoisseurs, where Balgandharva was the darling of music - crazy students. His musical programmes were often arranged and feasts, photo sessions, presentations of award in his honour were a routine thing. Narayan had given his first concert here at the age of 10. All that he got by way of payment was a jari cap and a black woollen coat.

An age which combined the extraordinary talents of the dramatist Khadilkar and the actor Bal Gandharva (till 1930s).

दीपस्तंभ - Maharashtra Today
It considers Krushnaji Prabhakar Khadilkar along with Bal Gandharva as "the architect of what later on came to be called the golden age of the Marathi drama. It’s a matter of pride that Khadilkar was graduated from Deccan College (1892) and he was closely associated with Sanskrit and English Plays during his college days.
